As one of Nike SB‘s foremost athletes, Nyjah Huston is no stranger to special makeups and signature models — the latest of which is his new SB Nyjah Free 2. Continuing the light and flexible ethos espoused on the SB Nyjah Free, the SB Nyjah Free 2 combines a flexible Nike Free sole with an upper inspired by a Nike sportswear classic: 1997’s Zoom Spiridon.
Speedy Spiridon style translates perfectly to Huston’s latest skate shoe, thanks to its trim build. This inspiration is hammered home even further by the color palette, a direct rework of the Spiridon’s famous “Metallic Silver” colorway. This rousing re-creation is made possible by a woven silver mesh upper with thick, durable seams that’s overlaid by a signature black mudguard. However, since skateboarding is the goal instead of running, this mudguard is build of a rubberized material and features a debossed Swoosh graphic towards the forefoot. Sturdy heel cages help lock the foot in place, and bright red Swooshes provide the most notable detail.
As with any good homage, however, it’s all about the little embellishments. A Spiridon-style lacing system features fabric eyestays and a tongue-length black fabric strip that ends in a pull tab with a “Nyjah” spellout graphic. “II” is emblazoned on each heel, and responsive white midsoles are completed with a red “SB” hit on the heel.
